Canon Announces Free Repairs for A650 IS

A minor problem affecting the Canon A650 IS has led Canon to announce that they will provide free repairs to fix a light leak issue.

From Canon - Oct 8, 2007

The announcement specifically concerns the A650's vari-angle LCD screen. On cameras with serial numbers that have a zero as the fifth number from the left, the LCD screen may become washed out and difficult to use when exposed to direct sunlight. If you have a camera with such a serial number, check inside the battery cover. There may be a marking inside indicating that your camera has already been repaired before it was even sold. The marking can be viewed at Canon's website.

Canon A650 IS

Grade: B+
HQ Grade: B+
A is outstanding and exceptional, rated in the top 10% of digital cameras.
B means they are good, with some standout features.
C means they are mediocre, and probably more trouble than they are worth.
D & F mean they are absolutely awful or old. Avoid at all costs.
from $549.99

We're pleased that Canon has jumped on this issue early and offered free repairs (details available at their website). The A650 IS should be an excellent camera, and it would be a shame if such a slip-up derailed it.
